Anthony Joshua to train with Team Usyk, promises to break the face of Jake Paul
Anthony Joshua is making changes to his corner once again.

The former two-time unified heavyweight champion has moved on from coach Ben Davison and will be training with Oleksandr Usyk’s team ahead of his fight against Jake Paul on December 19 at the Kaseya Center in Miami on Netflix.

Yuri Tkachenko and Sergey Lapin are part of Usyk’s longtime training team, but Joshua said that “Igor” will be his head coach without elaborating further. Joshua added that he’s been training with Team Usyk for the last couple of months. Earlier this month, The Ring reported on Joshua’s union with Team Usyk.

“I said that London is a bit distracting for me. I was invited to train with Team Usyk, so we’ve been doing some good training in Spain. [Usyk is] one of the best in the world, [and that’s] also down to his team,” Joshua said during a kickoff press conference on Friday.

Joshua (28-4, 25 KOs), who lost twice to Usyk by decision in 2021 and 2022, said that he hasn’t been sparring with Usyk, who’s been in and out of camp.

"It's been phenomenal, man. It's been a great experience, and it's very challenging,” said Joshua.

In recent years, Joshua has also worked with the likes of trainers Robert Garcia and Derrick James before linking up with Davison in 2023. Joshua was trained by Robert McCracken from the beginning of his career.

“It’s been a whirlwind,” said Joshua. “I’ve decided to shut down a lot of business, realigned my vision board, consolidated a lot of things, and trimmed down my team.”

Joshua last fought in September 2024, suffering a fifth-round knockout loss to Daniel Dubois. Joshua had elbow surgery afterward and said he was cleared to resume fighting eight months ago.

Joshua was quietly training for a surprise fight against Cassius Chaney as part of The Ring IV: Night of the Champions card in Saudi Arabia on Saturday, but those plans changed once Paul (12-1, 7 KOs) came into the picture.

“I wanted to take a year off, and it's time to get back to work. I was planning on fighting anyway [before Paul came into the picture],” said Joshua. “I don't think Jake is crazy. He's a logical person. He knows what he can do. He knows something within himself that maybe we don't. It was a great opportunity for me, and an opportunity for me to fight. It's great. It's massive. It's colossal. It's making big news.

“I'm going to break his face. I am going to break his body up. I'm going to stomp all over him. That's my fighter's mentality. I know what it is in my heart. I know what is in my mind. I am here to compete and prove to myself that I am the better fighter.

“I need to cut him up, I need to break him up, and I need to hurt him. I need to knock him out. There is nothing more than that.”
