Middleweight contender Austin “Ammo” Williams suffered the lone loss of his career against Hamzah Sheeraz in June.
Sheeraz leveraged his career-best win to a title shot against WBC middleweight champion Carlos Adames last month but fell flat and was fortunate to sneak away with a split draw.
Ahead of his Saturday night main event showdown against Patrice Volny (19-1, 13 KOs) at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, Williams (17-1, 12 KOs) is adamant that he’d be victorious in fights against Sheeraz and Adames if they are to be presented.
“My coach Kevin Cunnigham knows I would destroy Carlos Adames,” Williams told The Ring in an interview. “He's seen Adames spar and knows him. All respect to Adames, but it's the truth. So much conversation has been reawakened in the middleweight division because of that one fight I had with Sheeraz. You need a good dance partner, and I'm sure people would like to see the rematch.
“I took a step up fight against Sheeraz and came up short. But I took away my lessons from the experience and what was revealed to me at the world level. Even though the loss was the toughest moment of my life, it was a moment in time that exposed to me the changes that I needed to make. The world has not seen the best version of myself yet. The only way to evolve is to go through some failure and setbacks.”
The 160-pound division features WBO and IBF champion Janibek Alimkhanuly, WBA title holder Erislandy Lara, and WBC belt holder Adames. The Ring title is vacant, and Williams is not ranked in the top 10 in the weight class by The Ring. That honor goes to a group of contenders consisting of Sheeraz, Chris Eubank Jr., Etinosa Oliha, Kyrone Davis, Troy Isley, Shane Mosley Jr., and Denzel Bentley.
Williams believes he can quickly emerge as the face of the weight class.
“I've brought so much attention and conversation to the middleweight division. I sparked the flame,” said Williams. “I'm going to put on a superstar performance and show the improvements. I have not plateaued or peaked yet. As explosive and exciting as I have been, it's been the uneducated version of me.”
