Michael Hunter hates wasting his time. And the 37-year-old heavyweight contender feels he's been played with.
For the last few weeks, Hunter (24-1-2, 17 KOs) was under the impression that he'd face Jarrell Miller in Las Vegas on September 11 and that a deal was signed ... until it wasn't.
Both sides have pointed the finger at one another, but Hunter has accepted that he won’t be facing the brash New Yorker. Now he doesn’t have an opponent or a date.
Hunter doesn't want to sit on the sidelines, nor does he want to play matchmaker. But he does have a name in mind.
“I think Agit Kabayel would be a good fight,” Hunter told Chris Mannix on his YouTube channel. “I think that’s a very good fight.”
Kabayel (26-0, 18 KOs) isn’t the type to turn down a challenge, but before considering Hunter, or anyone else for that matter, he wants to play the waiting game.
Thanks to his win over Zhilei Zhang on February 22 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, he's in an ideal position. Not only was his sixth-round KO arguably the biggest victory of his career, it secured him the WBC interim title.
Having it in his possession is a good start, but what he truly wants is Oleksandr Usyk’s spot as undisputed heavyweight champion.
Before he stopped Zhang, Kabayel impressed in back-to-back outings against Arslanbek Makhmudov and Frank Sanchez, stopping both.
Scary would be a good way to describe Kabayel and his aggressive fighting style. But while some may shy away from him, his reputation attracts Hunter even more.
“He’s on that boogeyman side,” Hunter said. “Those are the guys I like to fight.”
