LONDON, England -- Frank Warren didn't mask his disappointment in
Daniel Dubois' performance during a rematch that ended four rounds earlier and more emphatically against
Oleksandr Usyk on Saturday night, though made sure to give the three-time, two-division undisputed champion his plaudits after reigning supreme at Wembley with aplomb.
The Queensberry chief admitted they were hopeful Usyk showed signs of ageing but the unbeaten Ukrainian quickly got into rhythm before dismantling Dubois with a clinical ease that has many wondering who could provide the best, fresh challenge for him next.
Now a fully-fledged heavyweight after conquering the cruiserweight division exclusively on away soil, a prospective matchup against
The Ring's 2024 Prospect of the Year Moses Itauma is something that HE Turki Alalshikh is eager to see come to fruition after sharing his post-fight thoughts on social media.
Itauma (12-0, 10 KOs) had barely finished secondary school and was still competing on the world scene as an amateur by the time Usyk won, then defended unified titles against two-time champion
Anthony Joshua. Yet increasing fanfare surrounding the 20-year-old's highlight reel wins has meant many believe it's now time he's tested against elite company.
Having blasted beyond Mike Balogun in Glasgow on May 24, the highly-regarded youngster was expected to make his return as part of the Usyk-Dubois 2 undercard this past weekend before
it was announced last month that he would pivot elsewhere for his first main event.
The Slovakian-born Kent resident already has business of his own to complete against longtime divisional contender and former two-time WBC interim champion
Dillian Whyte (31-3, 23 KOs) when
they headline a DAZN PPV bill in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on August 16.
When asked by The Ring about the potential for Usyk-Itauma next, Warren referred back to an early comment noting the WBO were the next sanctioning body in rotation for their mandatory challenger to be called - a title held by another of his stable,
Joseph Parker.
"The first defence of his title is the WBO belt against Joe Parker so that could be a great fight. He [Itauma] is fighting on August 16 in Riyadh and we'll see what happens after that, the WBO have ordered that fight [Usyk-Parker] and it will have to happen, or he'll vacate."
Warren doubled down later during the post-fight press conference, confirming an opportunity for former WBO titleholder Parker was the fight he wanted to see next as far as Usyk's next options are concerned. The 38-year-old named a host of names, including trilogies with Joshua and a
returning Tyson Fury, as possibilities during his in-ring interview.
Unless he decides to vacate a title as was the case last summer, Itauma's route to world championship gold remains one his handlers are being steady with. There was excitement around potential matchups against Parker and even Dubois, had results gone their way, though he's running his own race now and in no rush for an expedited title shot.
As a reminder, the WBO elevated him to No. 1 in their divisional rankings - to much discontent - after his 2nd-round stoppage over Balogun. He's also rated No. 2 by the WBA, though that won't influence their decisions until they believe he's ready to stay competing at a world-class level, with a
Martin Bakole-shaped matchup possibly awaiting them next.
