23 fights and eight years into his professional career, Irish welterweight
Dylan Moran is calling it a day.
The 30-year-old (19-4, 9 KOs) was hospitalised after another damaging stoppage defeat, this time after
seven gruelling rounds against Tyrone McKenna on the Lewis Crocker-Paddy Donovan 2 undercard.
The irony is McKenna (25-6-1, 8 KOs) has
flirted with retirement over the past few years, though in his fellow Irishman found a domestic rival inspiring him into an unexpected two-fight series that didn't need any build-up.
Moran confirmed the decision on Monday and wrote a social media statement knowing Saturday's contest would be his finale, with time spent in hospital reminding him against changing his mind.
"Since turning professional many years ago I have lived the absolute dream, had some years of my life that I'm very grateful for all because of boxing. All of that being said, with time, everything changes," he wrote on Instagram.
"I knew in the build up to this that I wasn't going to box again afterwards and that love that got me out of bed in the morning was gone. After spending the last two nights in hospital, worried sick confirmed that for me."
He cited being a good dad and partner as his main motivation, having found love with 'an amazing girl' last year. Declaring that the best thing to happen to him, it has tamed him and shifted his focus towards protecting his health for his family.
"She's made me become civilised. To be those things [a good dad and partner], I've gotta be healthy so it just doesn't add up these years. I'll always be around the game and look forward to many years of coaching, helping the young guys. To any young fighters reading this, enjoy everyday it's over in the blink of an eye."
McKenna responded to the post thanking Dylan after sharing 'two incredible nights' and wishing him future success.
Moran, who turned pro in 2017, racked up four victories over journeymen on shows promoted by former lightweight contender-turned-coach Kieran Farrell before four of his next six came across his native Ireland.
Armed with a 10-0 record, his golden opportunity stateside ended in a third-round stoppage loss by Kenya's Denis Okoth though he rebuilt across Europe, from Austria and Germany to Spain and back on British shores.
Moran's sixth-round stoppage win over longtime contender Mauro Maximiliano Godoy was parlayed into a fight booking on the Chris Eubank Jr-Liam Smith undercard in September 2023 against then-unbeaten
Florian Marku.
Marku dismantled him inside a minute, though Moran returned the following summer with a stoppage of 13-0 pro Owen O'Neill before his career-capping McKenna series.
