After Crushing Sergey Kovalev, Robin Safar Promises To Crash Cruiserweight Party
The cruiserweight division is heating up with The Ring and IBF champion Jai Opetaia and WBA and WBO titleholder Gilberto Ramirez inching closer to a potential undisputed bout, and the likes of Dmitry Bivol and David Benavidez entertaining entries into the weight class.

Robin Safar (17-0, 12 KOs) is promising to crash the party in a big way, and he will get the opportunity to further build his profile on Saturday when he takes on Roberto Silva (13-3, 7 KOs) in Cancun, Mexico on the undercard of the fight between William Zepeda vs. Tevin Farmer on DAZN.

Safar signed a promotional contract with Golden Boy last month after scoring a convincing unanimous decision win in May against Sergey Kovalev. Safar was a relative unknown heading into the contest, but he knocked down “The Krusher” and comfortably cruised past the faded version of the former pound-for-pound ranked light heavyweight champion, who was 40 years old at the time and is retiring after his upcoming fight on April 19.

“I showed that I had heart and the ability to become a world champion, and that's what I am going to be,” Safar said on DAZN. “I’m here to make noise in the cruiserweight division.

“[Opetaia and Ramirez] are good fighters. I can't take that away from them. But I don't feel that they are great fighters ... I am here to stay and I am here to take over. I just have to show who I am, that's it.”

Safar, a 32-year-old Swedish-Kurdish fighter based in Las Vegas, is a late bloomer. He started boxing at 19 and turned pro at 25. He’s trained by Ibn Cason, the younger brother of the former heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman and is currently ranked No. 12 by the WBO and No. 13 by the IBF.

Safar is now boasting a big game after scoring the big win – he said he’d stop his Golden Boy promotional stablemate Ramirez should they ever meet.

“I got it all; that's why,” said Safar. “I have a great ring IQ, I have power, I have speed. I know where I am in the ring and what I want to do. I use my tools the right way. It's not how to throw a punch, it's when you throw a punch.”
