Abel Sanchez Feels Shakur Stevenson Must Adjust Style To Beat Gervonta Davis, Lamont Roach
Shakur Stevenson prides himself on being perfect. That may seem like a good thing to some but for Abel Sanchez, it isn’t.

The Ring’s No. 4 ranked lightweight and current WBC champ has barely broken a sweat when defending his title. That pattern continued a few weeks ago as Stevenson outclassed and eventually stopped late replacement opponent, Josh Padley.

Stevenson’s hit and don’t get hit approach is supremely effective but according to Sanchez, a lot of it has to do with his competition level. Once he steps up and faces the elite guys in there, his cautious approach might bite him in the rear end.

“He’s gonna have to win rounds,” Sanchez told Fight Hub TV. “He just doesn’t do enough to win rounds decisively. Just not busy enough at times and too perfect. These guys are gonna do what’s necessary to win rounds.”

Speaking of the elites, two of the best 135-pounders in the world recently got it on. On March 1st in Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach took center stage. Ultimately, 36 minutes weren’t enough as things ended in a majority decision draw.

Stevenson (23-0, 11 KOs) wants to get in there with both men. He believes he has the skills to outbox them and anxiously wants to prove it. Sanchez though, isn’t so sure. As he continued to pontificate why Stevenson would have a horrible night at the office against certain fighters, he also pointed out that both Davis and Roach would have a little too much dog and aggression for the 27-year-old to overcome.

“Shakur has to be a little more forceful I think to deal with these guys,” explained Sanchez. “I don’t think that his approach can stay the way it is now and be able to deal with a Lamont or with a Gervonta.”
