NORFOLK, Virginia – Keyshawn Davis’ younger brother delivered for their hometown fans Saturday night a day after the former WBO lightweight champion was
stripped of his title for failing to make weight.
Keon Davis Stops Michael Velez
Keon Davis, a 23-year-old welterweight prospect, dropped Michael Velez twice in the second round, when he stopped his game Puerto Rican opponent with a body shot at Scope Arena. Referee Bill Clancy stopped their fight, scheduled for six rounds, at 2:22 of the second round because Velez couldn’t recover from the hard left that Davis landed to his body.
Norfolk’s Davis (4-0, 3 KOs) sent his hometown crowd into a frenzy by winning impressively on a night he was supposed to share with his older brother. Velez lost for the first time as a pro (3-1, 2 KOs).
Another of Davis’ older brothers, southpaw Kelvin Davis (15-0, 8 KOs), is scheduled to face Nahir Albright (16-2, 7 KOs, 1 NC) in a 10-round junior welterweight fight later Saturday night. ESPN will air the Kelvin Davis-Albright bout as the co-feature of a doubleheader that will showcase lightweight contender Abdullah Mason (18-0, 16 KOs), a southpaw from Cleveland, and Namibia’s Jeremiah Nakathila (26-4, 21 KOs) in the 10-round main event.
Euri Cedeno Halts Abel Mina
Earlier Saturday night, middleweight Euri Cedeno stopped Abel Mina following five one-sided rounds.
A left by Cedeno knocked Mina to the canvas just before the midway mark of the fifth round. Mina got up, but he hadn’t been competitive to that point in their scheduled 10-rounder, which led his handlers to stop their bout before the sixth round started.
The Dominican Republic’s Cedeno (12-0-1, 11 KOs) has won five consecutive bouts by knockout. Mina (18-4-1, 9 KOs), of Quito, Ecuador, lost by knockout for the second time in six years as a pro.
Deric Davis takes out Naheem Parker
In the previous fight Saturday night, lightweight prospect Deric Davis landed a thudding left to the body that stopped Naheem Parker just before the second round of their six-rounder ended.
Davis’ devastating shot sent Parker to his gloves and knees and he couldn’t beat the count.
Davis, of Fort Washington, Maryland, improved to 7-0 and produced his seventh knockout. Parker (5-3, 2 KOs), of Camden, New Jersey, lost inside the distance for the second time in eight weeks.
Patrick O'Connor TKOs Marcus Smith
In the opening bout on the Mason-Nakathila undercard, cruiserweight Patrick O’Connor won his pro debut by second-round technical knockout.
O’Connor (1-0, 1 KO), of Waldorf, Maryland, battered Marcus Smith with lefts and rights until Clancy stepped between them to halt the action because Smith wasn’t defending himself. The official time of the stoppage was 2:03 of the second round.
Smith (2-2, 2 KOs), of Carlisle, Ohio, was stopped in a second straight fight.
