Lightweight phenom Abdullah Mason is wasting little time looking to further prove his promise and potential.
The 20-year-old southpaw Mason will take on Giovanni Cabrera on April 5 at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas, an official informed of the deal told The Ring. The fight will take place on the undercard of the heavyweight bout between Richard Torrez Jr. and Guido Vianello.
It'll be a quick turnaround and another step up for Mason (17-0, 15 KOs), who on Friday dropped Manuel Jaimes four times en route to a fourth-round stoppage win. Jaimes came into the fight having lasted 10 rounds in a unanimous decision loss against the hard-hitting Rolando Romero in September.
Mason came into the Jaimes fight having to prove his November contest against Yohan Vazquez was a fluke as
he chased championship aspirations. Mason was dropped twice in the first round of his firefight but also dropped Vazquez in the opening frame before stopping him in the second.
The fight garnered Round of the Year recognition, and Mason was a finalist for The Ring’s Prospect of the Year award.
Against Cabrera (22-2, 7 KOs), Mason will face a slick and tricky boxer who last fought William Zepeda in July and suffered a third-round knockout loss due to a series of body shots. Cabrera is best known for beating the likes of Gabriel Flores Jr. and Rene Tellez Giron in 2022 and suffering a split decision loss to Isaac Cruz in 2023.
