Don’t tell Abdullah Mason to sit back and wait his turn.
Rarely does the sport of boxing allow you to skip the line. There are a few exceptions of course. Vasiliy Lomachenko fought for a world title in just his second pro fight before winning it in his third. Naoya Inoue grabbed a belt in his sixth. Mason, with already 16 fights under his belt, isn’t on that path, but he wouldn’t be mad if his handlers sped things up a bit.
This Friday night, at the Theater in New York’s Madison Square Garden, Mason will take on Manuel Jaimes. He might represent a step up on paper but Mason wants more.
Currently, the division Mason (16-0, 14 KOs) inhabits has some of the most recognizable names in the world. Residing at the top of said weight class, is Shakur Stevenson and Gervonta Davis.
Fantasizing about a matchup between Mason and either of those fighters seems a bit far-fetched. Both from a ranking and experience standpoint, it simply isn’t pragmatic. However, if Mason doesn’t land a shot against Stevenson or Davis due to his low ranking, then so be it. But, regarding his experience and skill set, Mason believes he’s more than ready.
“With them, I feel like I’ll be able to get the job done,” Mason told The Ring.
Ironically enough, as Mason continues to chase them down, the two are seemingly on a collision course. Stevenson (22-0, 10 KOs) must first get past Floyd Schofield on February 22nd, while Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) has a date with Lamont Roach a week later.
Mason’s hit list doesn’t contain just two names. Keyshawn Davis, Andy Cruz, Vasiliy Lomachenko, and Raymond Muratalla are all intriguing options. First things first, obviously, Mason has business to attend to. If he handles it, he believes that his future should start now.
“I’m prepared to step in with anybody.”
