Eimantas Stanionis respects Jaron Ennis but fear? That becomes a laughable topic when discussing a possible unification between the two. Ennis, The Ring’s number-one ranked welterweight and current IBF champion, is coming off an up-and-down year.
His 2024 started strong, pounding David Avanesyan to the tune of a fifth-round stoppage win. In his next outing, however, his fans were left bemused. At times, Ennis (33-0, 29 KOs) looked frantic, not composed, and flustered as Karen Chukhadzhian enjoyed plenty of moments of success. While it ultimately wasn’t enough, Ennis has sat back and listened as his game has been critiqued.
Stanionis, from his palatial estate, isn’t solely focused on Ennis’ recent performance. According to the current WBA belt holder and The Ring’s number two ranked welterweight, they were initially supposed to square off several years ago. So while some may point to Ennis’ showing against Chukhadzhian and highlight what he did wrong, Stanionis has always been of the belief that he isn’t as infallible as some may believe.
“Yes,” said Stanionis when asked if Ennis has any weaknesses. “When I was supposed to fight him in 2020, I saw holes.”
Perfection is an unattainable goal but it’s something that Stanionis (15-0, 9 KOs) strives for. Still, even with the countless hours he puts in the gym along with the numerous bottles worth of sweat he exudes, he knows that his game isn’t flawless.
“I think he (Ennis) sees the holes in my style as well.”
Stanionis, with his WBA title draped over his shoulder, would love nothing more than to fully unify the division. Ennis, of course, becomes one of his targets. He’s optimistic that conclaves will soon take place and a deal will be the outcome. If not, he’ll be forced to take on mandatory contender, Shakhram Giyasov.
The 30-year-old champion won’t eschew from facing Giyasov but quietly, he’s hoping that he can jump into the ring against someone he considers more on his level.
“Ennis is a great fighter. All due respect. I like his style but we have to just fight, not talk and prove it in the ring. I think everybody wants to see that fight. I can be his biggest test. I want that fight. He wants that fight.”
