Keith Thurman has been spotted doing everything but boxing over the years. He’s done a little bit of commentary, he travels the world, and he also enjoys his alone time. But, when it came to his life inside of the ring, that appeared just about over with.
Keith Thurman has been spotted doing everything but boxing over the years. He’s done a little bit of commentary, he travels the world, and he also enjoys his alone time. But, when it came to his life inside of the ring, that appeared just about over with.
At the age of 36, fighters are normally hanging up their gloves and seeking new hobbies. Thurman, on the other hand, is looking for his second wind.
Recently, the aging vet took it to Brock Jarvis, brutally stopping him in the third round in front of his Australian fans. Naturally, Tim Tszyu is ostensibly next. They were originally scheduled to get it on in early 2024 but injuries prevented Thurman from making it to fight night.
Naturally, Thurman and Tszyu could revisit a showdown but he doesn’t want to pigeonhole himself to just one option, especially when he has a long list of choices.
As he looks back on his career, Thurman smiles. He remembers the days when fans referred to him as “champ.” During his welterweight run, he proudly took on all comers. From Danny Garcia to Shawn Porter. One name, however, that slipped through the cracks was Errol Spence Jr. A matchup between them seems incredibly unlikely. But, if Spence, who’s never liked Thurman, wants to make it happen, now is the time.
“It can easily not be Tim Tszyu next,” said Thurman to FightHype.com when asked who his next opponent could be. “I’m ready to get in the ring with Errol Spence if he’s looking for a fight. There’s a lot of options and I’m willing to look at them all once they get brought to the table.”
Spence might be the new-age Keith Thurman. The former unified champ has been out of sight and out of mind since a 2023 stoppage loss to Terence Crawford.
Spence has been vagarious since that night. He flirted and teased fans over a possible comeback but nothing has come to fruition. Retirement doesn’t appear to be the first thing on his mind, but Thurman would like a bit of clarity on Spence's future plans.
Ultimately, it isn’t just about fighting Spence, Tszyu, or any of the top 154-pounders. Whenever Thurman turned in a great performance, he usually followed it up with a long inactive period. With that said, those days of being sequestered, hopefully, could be over.
“I just want to keep fighting," continued Thurman. "Let’s keep this momentum going.”
