LONDON, England - There was no weigh-in drama on Friday morning as both Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn comfortably made weight ahead of Saturday’s showdown at Spurs.
But in a surprising twist, it was Benn who was the marginally heavier of the two when they hit the scales.
Having missed the weight before the first fight, Eubank Jr (35-3, 25 KOs) came in at 159.1 pounds this time around, well below the 160-pound limit. Benn, meanwhile, was 159.3 pounds.
With job done on Friday, all eyes now turn to Saturday morning’s second weigh-in when both men will have to adhere to the contractual rehydration clause, which stipulates that they cannot be more than 10 pounds heavier than the 160-pound middleweight limit.
“Conor looked great, amazing,” Benn’s promoter Eddie Hearn told The Ring. “But he is quite a bit heavier than last time.
“He just really filled out in this training camp and both guys look in tremendous shape.”
There was drama on the scales ahead of their first fight, when Eubank Jr missed the 160-pound weight by just 0.05 pounds. As per the terms of the contract he was fined £375,000 of his fight purse and Benn later revealed he spent it on a new Rolls Royce.
Eubank did, however, successfully make the weight on the morning of fight day, coming in at 169.4 pounds while Benn was 165 pounds second time around.
When the pair came together for the first face-off of fight week on Monday evening, Benn told Eubank he was hoping the Brighton man would come in over again so he can pocket another unexpected windfall - but that was not the case on Friday morning.
Following his Dubai training camp under Brian ‘Bomac’ McIntyre, the 36-year-old from Brighton came in unexpectedly light on the scales in a curtained-off section on the mezzanine floor of the Stratford Hotel, east London.
Having weighed 156.5 pounds for the first fight, 159.3 pounds represents a new career-heaviest for 29-year-old Benn, who insists this will be his second and final fight at middleweight. As he told The Ring in September, Benn instead has designs on dropping back to welterweight in order to secure a shot at WBC champion Mario Barrios.
First, on Saturday night, he will return to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in a bid for revenge, nearly seven months on from his first defeat to Eubank, when all three judges scored the contest 116-112 in Eubank’s favour.
